Strong Like a Gymnast

From toddlers to teens (and even adults!) the gymnastics program at Toby Wells YMCA is your place to grow strong, get confident, find balance and jump into fun. Based on the skills, levels and progressions developed by USA Gymnastics, our gymnasts learn in an encouraging atmosphere as they build skills to progress through each level of the program. 

About the Program 

If you are new to our gymnastics program, you may have some questions! 

Preschool Gymnastics (Walking to 5 years)

Each class is designed to help children gain coordination, balance, listening, social skills, and motor skills, all in a fun gymnastics environment. Choose from:

  • Gymventures 1 - Walking to 24 months
  • Gymventures 2 - Age 2
  • Transitional Kindergym - Ages 2-1/2 to 3-1/2
  • Kindergym - Ages 3 to 4
  • Kindergym Advanced - Ages 3 to 5

Progressive Boys Gymnastics  (Ages 5 to 12)

Boys in Progressive classes will have the opportunity to use all of the men’s gymnastics apparatus: floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars, and horizontal bar. Children enrolled in these classes learn gymnastics terminology and develop strength, coordination, flexibility and self-confidence. Levels and options include:

  • Novice
  • Levels 1 to 3
  • Noncompetitive
  • Competitive Team
  • Teen

Progressive Girls Gymnastics  (Ages 5 to 12)

Girls enrolled in Progressive Classes will gain experience on each of the four women’s gymnastics apparatus: vault, uneven parallel bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. Children enrolled in these classes learn gymnastics terminology and develop strength, coordination, flexibility, and self-confidence.  Levels and options include:

  • Levels 1 to 2

Competitive Teams

Boys Team
Level 4 - Elite • Evaluation required

Our competitive team trains from 2 to 6 days a week (level dependent). The gymnastics team competes successfully among private clubs, local and abroad. We have had many state, regional, junior Olympic national qualifiers, junior national team members, and several boys who participate at the collegiate level. We strive to maintain a positive environment that builds healthy bodies, strong minds and willing spirits.

Girls Pre-Team
Evaluation required

Kids interested in joining pre- team will be evaluated and placed into one of our pre- team programs (JO Pre team or Xcel Pre Team). 

Girls Team 
Level 3-10 and Excel • Evaluation required.

Our competitive team trains from 2 to 6 days a week (level dependent). The team competes successfully among private clubs in Southern California. We have had state, regional, national qualifiers, and several girls participating at the collegiate level. We strive to maintain a positive environment that builds healthy bodies, strong minds and willing spirits.

Progressive Program FAQs

Attire for classes

Girls: Leotards or comfortable shorts and T-shirt. Avoid clothes with zippers, snaps, and buttons. Hair must be pulled back. No jewelry or gum.
Boys: Athletic shorts and T-shirt. Avoid clothes with zippers, snaps, and buttons. Students may wear socks or go barefoot. Hair must be pulled back. No jewelry or gum.

Class size

Progressive classes have a ratio of 1:8. Depending on registration, there may be fewer than 8.

Checking in for class

On the first week of each month, check-in is required and a check-in table will be located outside the gymnastics facility. After the first week, check-in is not required until the first week of the next month. Check-in is required to ensure your child is registered and in the correct level. Please bring a receipt if you register on the day of class.

Registering for classes

Registration is available for up to 3 months in advance. Classes are often full; we suggest registering 3-4 weeks in advance to ensure your child gets the class day/time you want.

Progressing to the next level

To achieve promotion to the next level a student must be able to perform all skills in their current level. The necessary skills for each level are available to you from Rebecca Floyd, Progressive Coordinator. We encourage all parents to communicate with Rebecca or their child’s instructor regarding your child’s progression. If your child’s instructor feels that he/she is ready for an evaluation, they will let you and your child know.

Evaluations

Evaluation sign-ups are posted the third week of the session and evaluations take place during the last week of every session only with Rebecca. Only those gymnasts who have been evaluated by Rebecca will be allowed to move to the next level, if they pass their evaluation. If your child passes you must present the evaluation sheet to the front desk in order for them to complete the registration. Appointments can be made at the gym on the evaluation board posted near the entrance to the gymnastics center. Move ups occur at the start of a new session and never in the middle of a session.

Parents/guardians working out

If your child is registered in the progressive program (ages 5+) and you are a YMCA member, you can work out in the Toby Wells Facility during their class. You must be present for pickup from the coach at the conclusion of their class.

Viewing classes

In order to maintain optimum learning conditions, spectators are required to observe from the viewing areas ONLY. Parents are not permitted in the gymnastics center to ensure the safety of our participants and the parents.

Bathroom breaks

We use a buddy system for bathroom breaks. If you would like to take your child to the bathroom during class, we will happily send your child to you in the waiting area for bathroom breaks. This will require you to stay in the waiting area during the entire class.
