The YMCA of San Diego County is proud to have several Y members competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics this year. Among them are two athletes who are regular swimmers at Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA in Encinitas. Paratriathlete Amy Dixon and competitive swimmer Michael Andrew are two Encinitas residents who will be representing Team USA this summer. We wish these amazing members the best of luck, and know that they have already made our Y proud!

Whether you are a beginner swimmer or on your way to the Olympics, the Y is a great place to make a splash. Many professional swimmers and Olympians got their start at the YMCA, including five-time Olympic medalists Ian Crocker and Janet Evans. The Y has been teaching and encouraging swimmers of all ages, abilities and interests for more than 100 years! But one thing never changes: we’re dedicated to helping people grow in skill and confidence for a lifetime of fitness and water safety. We focus on the key elements of aquatics: stroke development, water safety and personal growth.

Swim Team Programs at the Y

Our swim team programs offer fun and challenging environments for swimmers who can already demonstrate basic skills and are ready to take those skills to the next level. Swimming as part of a team builds character, instills discipline, enhances self-esteem and promotes physical fitness, all of which can be used throughout a lifetime. Dive into one of our swim team programs and discover high-level coaching combined with fun, fitness and encouragement!

Youth Swim Teams

YMCA youth swim teams offer the chance to experience the enormous health benefits of swimming while enjoying the fun, excitement and character lessons that come with being a member of a competitive team. Our swim teams help both novice and more experienced swimmers improve their strokes, gain confidence and maximize their potential.

“Swim team helps me build up the courage I need to participate in races, develop my swimming strokes and make friendships with teammates,” says Travis, a 16-year-old member of the Copley-Price Family YMCA swim team. “It doesn't matter where you're from or what your culture is, what matters is that you are able to find your place here on the team — it feels like home.”

Youth swim teams are led by trained coaches to enhance swimmers' competitive skills and endurance through both appropriate developmental progression and healthy competition.

"The Y provides a remarkable environment for the kids to train and learn," says Jennifer, the parent of a Silver-level swimmer. "The exceptional coaching staff provides positive, constructive feedback that makes them want to keep coming back to learn!"

Masters Swim

The YMCA's Masters swim program is a structured lap swim workout designed to help intermediate-advanced swimmers ages 15 and up improve their stroke, form, ability, endurance and stamina. All practices have a coach on deck and workouts incorporate drills and work sets to develop and refine your swimming skills. While Masters swim is a great low-impact workout for the entire body, it's also a fantastic way to meet like-minded swimmers and make new friends!
