For many students from historically underserved communities, after-school programs became an outlet to develop their academic skills and dive into their passions – like learning to play a new musical instrument or playing soccer with peers. YMCA of San Diego County's Expanded Learning Programs are designed collaboratively with district partners to provide students with active and engaging learning environments during the hours most parents or guardians are working, thus supporting students and families so our community may thrive.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, school closures left students without access to distance learning support, food security, and important social-emotional learning. Our Expanded Learning Programs stepped up during this time, offering unprecedented and unwavering support to school district partners, students, families, and the community.

“[The program] was phenomenal at supporting students and families during COVID. Always going above and beyond opportunities for families and students,” said a school principal.

“Trusted and caring staff trained to provide academic, social, emotional and other support to students and also help coordinate with the school day,” said a YMCA of San Diego County partner.

In going above and beyond his responsibilities with the YMCA of San Diego County, Nestor Munoz helped develop and implement a number of program models to best meet the community’s needs for students during the pandemic. During his eight years with the organization, Nestor first excelled as a Site Supervisor, then Quality Programs Coordinator, and now serves as the interim Program Director for Expanded Learning Programs with National School District and San Ysidro School Districts.

Nestor has served as a role model for younger staff, thousands of students, and families in an important and equitable way – bringing his authentic self into his work to help everyone meet their fullest potential. His passion and purpose in working with the National City and San Ysidro communities embody mentorship, health, recreation, and commitment to being a first responder for kids, families, and staff. Nestor has helped redefine leadership for and with the community when it comes to education during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He deeply understands the challenges the community faces and works tirelessly to find solutions, even while off the clock. He makes sure families have access to food, emotional support, academic coaching, housing referrals, COVID-19 vaccine information and much more.

Learning cannot happen without whole family and community support – and Nestor is a trusted messenger who continues to make this happen. Thank you for all you do, Nestor!
